Hi! I’m Ruth, the owner and creator behind the scenes here at Alternative Bread Co.
I grew up on a farm in North Otago and I wasn't exactly thrilled about driving tractors or hanging out in the shearing shed, so instead I would help Mum with the cooking and smokos along with the dishes! Sunday morning was Mum's baking time and we always had delicious homemade baking in the tins, tan square was always my fav! We would tussle for a spot on the old cane laundry basket, eagerly waiting to snag a beater from the cake mixer and give it a good lick!
I was shocked when I found out about my coeliac diagnosis right before my 21st birthday. At that time, information and resources were scarce, so we had to make our own icing sugar for my cake! It wasn't until much later, when my 3-year-old daughter, who loves bread, was diagnosed, followed quickly by my 70-year-old mum, that I made it my mission to ensure she never went without. I wanted her to experience the joy of home baking just like I did. A delicious gluten-free sandwich shouldn't be unusual; it should be the standard.
Once we created our bread mixes, we thought, why stop there? We've got biscuits, cakes, and slices just waiting to be devoured! And let me tell you, those chocolate chuck cookies were something else. It was my first time baking gluten-free cookies that actually stayed round!
My goal is to ensure that everyone gets a seat at the table, figuratively speaking. Whether it's at a family dinner, playtime at school, blowing out candles on a birthday cake, or grabbing a snack from the smoko basket, no one should be left out.
